Past and Forward: UPLSAA @ 60!

To my dear friends, classmates and fellow alumni from UP SLIS, here are the details of our much-awaited alumni homecoming:

"On 15 May 2010, Saturday, 3:30pm at the Balay Kalinaw in UP Diliman, we will be witnessing this once in a lifetime celebration of our 60th Homecoming and General Assembly dubbed as Past and Forward: UPLSAA @60!

We are cordially inviting you to attend our 1950’s themed 60th Homecoming. This is a great opportunity for us to chit chat, catch up on each other and on the events that have been happening and will be happening to our association and to SLIS as well. We are assuring you that this celebration will both be pleasurable and meaningful. It will be the 50’s sock hop (1950’s party spot to be) and soda shop! Girls in poodle skirts with tight fitted blouses and boys in jeans and white shirts with rolled up sleeves. Remember the peppermint dances, twist, mashed potato, the pony, and the swim? And whowill not forget rock and roll? Elvis
Presley, Eddie Mesa, Rockey Fellers, Pilita Corrales, Marilyn Monroe, Chuck
Berry, Diomedes Maturan, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Peregrina, Buddy
Holly, and Johnny Ray. There will be a photobooth (1950’s style), bazaars, raffle, games, good music, good food and fabulous company!

The ticket costs PhP300, inclusive of snacks and dinner, ticket to the photobooth, and to an evening of meaningful celebration. A portion of this amount will also go to the UP School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) Building Fund. By 2011, the SLIS will celebrate its Golden Anniversary, and by then, we hope that our dearly loved institute/school will have its new home."

A librarian lost in a party ???

For sure, I ain't one...


While watching the barenaturals segment of the show Qtube last night, I was kinda struck by the closing remarks of that segment (FYI: barenaturals is a cosmetics brand). So, this is how it went: the host was nearly closing and then saying "without xxxxx product, you would either look like a lost librarian in a party or a hip chic blah blah blah". And I was kinda', what the???

Admittedly, I was somehow offended by that phrase. I mean, do media personalities, or even those behind those productions, really need to bash other's profession just to stay on top of the game or to make their words more appealing??? I know people in the media are not dumb enough to know that.

Our breed of librarians now are the young once, the party-goers, the boozers, and the loud people. We are the adventure-seekers, movie-goers, cheerful, friendly information professionals. And NOT the Miss-Tapia-Pony-Tailed-Hair-Wearing-Thick-Eyeglasses-Stamping-Book-Cards-
Shouting-STOP-QUIET!!! anymore. That was the stereotype which we are trying to break. It was really saddening and offending that our profession is being looked down. The phrase seemed to be a hasty generalization saying that we librarians do not go to parties or are not even allowed to attend one.

But I guess, instead of taking it negatively, let's put it the other way around. If people really think that ALL librarians are introvert and MUST be kept ONLY inside the library, we librarians should take it as a challenge to step out, be proud and shout out loud that "I AM A LIBRARIAN."

Manic Monday

Well, here I am again, blogging of what about, what has been or what will be. Anyway, yesterday was quite busy and hectic. As one of my friends said, "Pahinga ka naman, baka magkasakit ka" (Take a rest, you might get sick). FYI: Before this manic Monday, I was in a 3-day seminar last week from Wednesday to Friday in UP ITTC. I thought it would be a good time-off, and it was. Well, so I thought.

Coming back to my office yesterday morning was, ugh, quite pleasant (for I will meet my students again and hear them laugh and smell them stink, hehe, in my office) and, ugh,waaaaaahhh!!! really!!! For I have a lot of things left to do, I have a pile of DVDs on my table for evaluation, I was being looked for by teachers first thing in the morning for they will borrow materials for their classes, I was phoned by my boss telling me about our meeting in the afternoon, I was re-checking the LRC Newsletter, getting it ready for distribution, and UGH, I was quite anxious for in that meeting, I know, I know that it will be a tough situation if I will get in or be booted out of this institution. It was like the finals night of American Idol. *tug-dugsh* *tug-dugsh* I was quite confident, though. For even if I wouldn't be re-hired, at least I would leave a mark, maybe not in the institution per se, but more with my colleagues (I hope).

And so the monthly report was done, I also prepared a reconfiguration design of my chart shelves to better accommodate my charts and maximize my space. In addition, I prepared a better floor plan for my library to make it more spacious, so that next year, it would be comfier for students to get into my (or his/her -- if that would be the case) office and sit and play around. I, then submitted them to my boss and I am still waiting for an update from her.

Well, the meeting went smooth. We prepared our Annual Action Plan (assuming I would still be here) for the next School Year 2010-2011. We anchored activities for each month, and of course the good side of the meeting: merienda, ayt Sir Ian? haha!

Well, that's how it all happened yesterday, and right now, I am preparing yet another paper: a Project Proposal, which I would really love to submit in our meeting (again) later. That would be my update for now.

Kindly watch out for my new DVDs that would be released soon. (No, I ain't the artist, I'm just the librarian. haha!)

And that's why I love Sir Igor ...

Today is yet another day of the Web Technology seminar, and this would be the last. But I'm happy that at least today, it is not too much of a technical aspect (no puns intended). I mean, there's more interaction between the participants and yeah, thanks to Sir Igor, that was made possible. What I mean is, yeah, it's good to listen to profound speakers but it's way way better to hear a word from a colleague (or former teacher) who really speaks from the grassroots. He can explain the topic with much enthusiasm that participants won't get lost (so far, no one's yet :D) because of the alien terms.

One way, I think, to start your day great is listen and appreciate. (to be continued)

Why attend?

Lunch break. Blogging thru the portal of UP ITTC, here in Vidal Tan Hall. My tummy is yet full of sumptuous roasted chicken and chopsuey. Plus mango pastries. Sweet. :) Anyway, you may wonder why I am here and yes, I wonder, too. Honestly, I really thought that this would be one of those B-O-R-I-N-G, get-me-out-of-here or I-don't-want-t-go-because-I'm-still-sleepy seminars but then I was wrong. ENGK!!!

So far I am still enjoying this seminar, from with what-have-you's on the Internet to creating your own blogs and websites and even fixing faulty accounts (which I really find interesting). It is very commendable that in the advent, no it's not the advent anymore, but in the progress of technology in the 21st century, our librarians (I included) really try their best to adapt with the situation. And I think that is one of the best traits that a librarian should acquire. Being a librarian is not just being confined in the four corners of the library; it is getting out of those four corners even to your clientele's home just to reach them with your service and make them realize the importance of our profession.

Oh and by the way, the title of this seminar is "Web Technologies: Training for development of library and teaching resources" and I am more interested on the teaching resources part for it would really help my job as a school librarian.

First Pose (Post, I mean)

I started writing this blog for two simple reasons:

First, because I want my daily activities be accounted for so that somehow I can retrace my life in case I get possessed by Dory's spirit

Dory is the name of the Regal Tang Fish in Finding Nemo, who has a short term memory

Second is because I want to promote my profession -- Librarianship; reach out to my users through this blog (yeah, you're free to give out comments) and; of course, update them through the Current Awareness Services that our library in De La Salle Zobel School offers.

Luckily for us, DLSZ librarians, our Learning Resource Center (LRC) is strongly supported by the administration. However, we have a problem regarding the positioning of our Bulletin Boards, especially in the Lower Grades Division because our spaces all have been utilized. So, I guess putting up a blog like this would somehow help in disseminating information on "What's New in my Library". Thanks to the new technology of blogging, somehow my users can get updated anytime, anywhere. Hope to hear from you soon.
